Aromas at Meijer Gardens

Lavender Orchid

In the Tropical Room I came across the "Orchid Wall". The first orchid I decided to smell was a light lavender one. I am not sure the exact name of it but I would assume that it is native to tropical regions. I was excited to smell this orchid, as I anticipated it would smell fresh and delightful. However, much to my surprise the orchid smelled of a strong, sour odor. The aroma was very strong and made me wince. It reminded me of bad food that has been sitting out on the counter one day too long. It was not a sweet smell and did not at all fit with the beautiful appearance of the flower. The smell also seemed to stay with me as a continued on through this room. However, when I later returned to smell the flower its aroma was the same the second time around. Each time I went back to smell the orchid, I was taken aback by its rotten smell. The aroma did not in any way correlate with what I expected to smell from such as delicate, lovely plant!
